Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)

Translated by Robert Friend

Some day when I lose you,

how will you sleep, my love,

without me murmuring near you

like linden leaves above you?

And without me watching here,

words pressed

almost like eyelids

upon your mouth and limbs

and gently on your breast?

Without my leaving you

alone with what is yours,

like a garden that reposes

with throngs of stars and star-anise,

melissas and roses?
