What We Won

We are happy now.

We have voted death
away, and we will hold it
to the bargain.

We are young enough
to forget that we have no
parents, and that the world
has a short memory for those
who buffer their bleeding.

We are old enough to know
that silk ties are no guarantee
of prosperity for those who wait
for the patient dust to evolve.

But bibles are free here
and hope is neatly queued
while your peacekeepers
distract the dark clouds.

Perhaps they will pass over
for a change.

Haven't we memorised
the meaning of 'first-born'?
